I started welding after I inherited some minimal equipment. This included an old abrasive chop saw, a grinder, a couple sets of gloves and a few clamps. I borrowed a helmet from my brother and a flux-core welder from my SIL’s father and got to it. Let’s just say, I’ve been through the struggle of not having the right tool!
These are some of my Must-Have items I have accumulated over time.
Welding Magnets
Welding Magnets are essential for 90 degree corners and get heavy use on projects like the Infinity Cube. I find myself using the bigger ones a lot to just hold pieces in place while I tack them, even if not for the standard 90 degree corner joints.
Digital Sliding T-Bevel
This Digital Sliding T-Bevel is a great tool for making sure your saw is set to the proper angle and that your project is fitting up as you calculated. I use this a lot when building X Legs, or even Trapezoid frames to ensure both corners are the same.
Flap Discs
Flap Discs may seem like a no brainer to some, but for those of you just starting out, these are a life saver! As the saying goes “grinding and paint makes me the welder I ain’t”. Flap discs are fantastic for prepping material prior to welding, and flating welds before paint. I usually use 40 grit / type #29 and grab a cheap 10 pack from Amazon. You’ll be changing them more often, but at a couple bucks each, it’s hard to beat.
Welding Jacket
A Welding Jacket is a must have for me, being located in the North and wokring in an unheated shop. If you don’t live in a cold area, I still recommend some type of Flame Resistant outer wear. I’ve burnt enough holes in sweatshirts to fork over the money for one. This Lincoln Electric one is incredibly warm and won’t break the bank.
