The hourglass pedestal base is my latest pedestal design that works well for a round or square table top.
The first one I built was for bar height, but it could equally be used for an end or even dining room table.
Hourglass Pedestal Base Definitions
Calculator Inputs
Height: The overall height of the base.
Width: The overall width of the base.
Center Opening: The distance between the two sides, in the very middle of the base. The opening affects the angle. A larger value means the angled pieces are more straight.
Tubing Size: Assumes square (box tubing).
The dimensions can be put in any unit (mm / cm / in / etc) as long as all units are the same. The outputs will be the same unit.
Calculator Outputs
Angled Pieces Miter: The angle of the cut required for the angled pieces of each post. Both ends of these pieces are cut at the same angle. You’ll need to set your miter saw to 90 – this angle. E.g. if this is 75 degrees you’d set your saw to 15 degrees (90 – 75).
Angle Pieces Length: This is the length of angled pieces required to make the vertical posts.
Top/Bottom Long Piece Length: The long piece used on the top and bottom and is essentially the width of the base. If you plan on capping off the ends then you will need to subtract out the 2 times the width of the steel you plan to cap off the ends with.
Top/Bottom Short Piece Length: The short piece used on the top and bottom is half of the base width minus the tubing size. (Width – Tubing Size) / 2. If you are capping these off you will need to subtract out the width of the steel used to cap them off.
Hourglass Pedestal Base Cut List
In order to build the Hourglass Pedestal Base you will need the following quantities of each piece:
- (8) angled pieces
- (2) top/bottom long pieces
- (4) top/bottom short pieces
